Veterinary endoscopy allows us to look directly at vital areas of a pet’s anatomy, going where our hands and eyes can’t.
The endoscope is a narrow, flexible tube with a video camera on the end. It can be passed in areas such as the trachea, lower airways, esophagus, stomach, and colon. The endoscopy video is shown on a monitor for direct evaluation.
Besides a direct visualization of the hollow internal organs that can show disease, veterinary endoscopy can be used for biopsies, making them an invaluable tool in diagnosing and treating diseases.
Since veterinary endoscopy allows a pet’s organs to be viewed in real time, the results can be immediate. However, with a veterinary biopsy, the final diagnosis usually depends on the results of the pathologist’s study. This may take up to a week, depending on the individual circumstances.
Gruda Veterinary Hospital also offers rigid veterinary endoscopy. These narrow scopes are not flexible, but can be inserted into an animal’s nasal passageways, joints, or abdomen to assist in diagnosis and treatment of many different kinds of diseases.
