Ultrasound

Ultra sound procedure

In addition to our other diagnostic services, we are able to provide ultrasound services in-house.

An ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging procedure that enables an in-depth view of your pet’s organs. Many times x-rays, which reveal the size, dimensions and position of the organ, will be utilized in combination with an ultrasound. However, the ultrasound can see inside the organs in great detail unlike the x-ray, which can only see a rough silhouette.

Ultrasound is a highly useful in evaluating heart conditions (referred to as an echocardiogram) and detecting alterations in abdominal organs such as cysts and tumors. Fine needle biopsies of most organs can be obtained with little or no sedation and submitted for cytology analysis. Sedation is never used on heart examinations. Doppler examination enables the diagnosis of complex congenital heart diseases. With the ability to obtain real time information, outcomes can often be determined immediately.

Naomi Burtnick, MT (ASCP) our ultrasonagrapher, taught for 20 years at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Hospital. For the last 17 years she has been the owner of the New Mexico Veterinary Ultrasound Referral Center in affiliation with Dr. Larry Tilley.

All of our studies are reviewed by a boarded veterinary cardiologist or internist to recommend therapy, (Drs. Larry Tilley and Frank Smith, our two cardiologists, are world renowned; Dr. Sarah Noble, our internist, has over 20 years of experience providing recommendations for therapy for abdominal ultrasound studies).
