Holiday Hazards for Pets
Hidden among the feasts, goodies, decorations and celebrations of the holidays are easily overlooked hazards that could threaten the well being of our beloved pets.
Feasts & Goodies
Straying from your pet’s normal diet with holiday fare may cause gastro- intestinal upset. Ham or any fatty food, for that matter, can cause mild to fatal pancreatitus in pets. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea. Raisins, chocolate and macadamia nuts can be deadly if ingested.
Decorations
Make sure your tree is well secured and that tinsel and other stringy adornments are well out of reach. Please remember that Christmas lights and loose cords can cause electrocution if chewed. Avoid decorating with mistletoe as some species can be hazardous, causing cardiovascular problems. Keeping poinsettias out of reach to avoid stomach upset is still a good idea but according to the ASPCA, you need not banish the poinsettia from your home for fear of toxic exposure.
